Index cards (Pairs)

People often sit next to a person they already know, so when you ask them to pair up, they will be talking to someone they could talk to any time. Instead, you can mix them up into random pairs using pre-prepared index cards, as shown in this brief video.

Not only does it inject a burst of energy and humour into the room, but the pairs might have more interesting conversations as a result.
